Take Jewellery Out Before Body Spray or Perfume?

A fragrance mist on a freshly styled ear stack can seem harmless, but perfume residue is not jewellery care. The simple answer to whether to take jewellery out before spraying perfume or body spray is yes - wherever it is practical and safe to do so.

Why perfume and body spray can affect jewellery

Perfume, body spray and hairspray can leave a film of alcohol, oils and fragrance ingredients on your pieces. Over time, this can dull the shine of sterling silver, build up around stones and details, and make body jewellery look less fresh than it should.

It is not only about the metal. Residue can collect around the post, bar or clasp, especially in close-fitting pieces such as helix hoops, tragus studs and nose jewellery. That means more cleaning for you and less of that polished finish you chose the piece for.

Take jewellery out before spraying perfume or body spray

For healed piercings, remove your jewellery, apply your fragrance, then let it dry fully before putting your pieces back in. This is particularly worthwhile when wearing sterling silver, plated designs or jewellery with decorative stones.

With solid gold jewellery, the risk of tarnishing is lower, but fragrance can still leave a cloudy residue. A quick wipe with a soft, dry jewellery cloth after wearing helps keep it bright.

What about a new or healing piercing?

Do not remove jewellery from a healing piercing just to apply perfume. Instead, spray fragrance before getting dressed and keep it well away from the piercing site. Avoid spraying your neck directly if you have a fresh lobe, cartilage or nose piercing nearby.

If your jewellery does catch body spray, gently clean the outside with warm water and dry it carefully. Do not use harsh cleaners or scrub around a healing piercing.

Your jewellery should be the finishing touch, not the first thing your perfume lands on. Give fragrance a moment to settle, then put on the pieces that make your look feel complete.
